About the event
THE MOUTH OF THE GODS is a combined arts and heritage project, which will see us collaborate with London's Latin American communities to explore their history, music, dances, rituals, costumes and other cultural traditions. At the centre of the project is the short opera ST. FRANCISCO XAVIER, written by an anonymous Indigenous composer for performance by Indigenous musicians on the Jesuit missions during the 18th century.
The opera will be the climax of a full-length performance at Hoxton Hall, and the performance will be the climax of a major engagement project. The first part of the event will make use of other music from the same region and period, coupled with drama, dance and traditional ritual to tell the story of Latin America's Indigenous communities from their own point of view.
